10 Most Awesome Vocalists

This list is created solely on my own experience from listening music since...I don't remember, 7? Yes, this list is based on rock and metal vocalists only, because I wouldn't want to cover RnB or Soul cause I rarely listen to that genre of music. And yeah, I always wanted to do a list like this, it's just some sort of personal fetish I guess. There probably will be more of such lists in the future.

So here we go, the 10 Most Awesome Vocalists I have ever got the privilege to listen to throughout my whole period of music addiction. If there are anyone that I missed out from here, it's probably due to these few reasons:

1.They didn't leave a lasting effect on me on their vocals.
2.I didn't get the chance to listen to them in much deeper depth.
3.They're just pretty normal to me.

But yeah, don't refrained from calling me an asshole in my comment box or you can be a saint and tell the world who your most awesome vocalist is.

Let's get this going.

10.

Till Lindermann

Frontman of Industrial Metal band,Rammstein. His vocal range isn't that wide but he does evoke emotions with his mellow drone. And he sure as hell can grunt out choruses pre-Reise,Reise. After the release of the aforementioned Reise,Reise, he started to build his vocal range and starts to actually adopt this operatic vocal. Therefore, he is in number 10 for his ability to change from a dull, repetitive vocalist, to a vocalist that can actually sing.

Top 3 tracks:
1. Stein Um Stein
2. Mutter
3. Seemann

9.

Howard Jones

He screams, he shrieks, he grunts...but most importantly, he SINGS! And I'm not saying half-assed-emo-spurts, I'm talking about range and emotion. This guy is really unique, 'cause not alot of vocalists can do what he does and get through a 1 hour 30 minute set without breaking his voice. And yes, I know there are better grunters, squealers, screamers, shriekers(heck, my mom is better than Howard, that I can confirm). But this guy takes this spot cause of his ability to stay in range and not break his vocals.

Tracks to check:
1. The Arms of Sorrow
2. My Curse
3. When Darkness Falls
4. The Element of One(Live from the World Ablaze DVD)

8.

Mark Lanegan

He takes drugs excessively, he looks like Hellboy... all of that are redundant when you listen to his low, gruffy vocals. It is sexy, it is manly and it sure as hell sounds good for a guy who doesn't have that much of a range to start with due to the excessive drinking and smoking. But he sure has kept his vocals in tip top shape. Solo album Bubblegum has good tracks that showcases his vocals as a rock and roller as well as a lullaby machine. In short, this dude is here due to the fact that he's unique. I dare you to find a vocalist that has a similar gruff WITHOUT actually straining his vocals and is still soothing to listen to.

Top 3 tracks:
1. In The Fade(QoTSA)

2. Methamphetamine Blues(Solo)

3. Witness(Screaming Trees)

7.(Edited)

Jack Black

After much thought, I think the number 7 spot should go to Jack Black. Incredible comedian but what shocked me the most is his velvety vocals and falsettos that always soar without breaking a single note. He's vocal teacher material and a rock god vocalist but he is humble enough to just settle for comedy-rock in Tenacious D.

Top 3 Tracks:
1. Wonderboy
2. Tribute
3. That song with Beelzeboss in Pick of Destiny

6.

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden - Audioslave)

His solo work is crap, he can do better than that but you can't deny that he used to have a very wide range and a very stable control over his vocals. He can croon and drone all he wants then the next minute your ears would be melting from his banshee-ish wail. Soundgarden was where he shone the most although Audioslave had some good points, he seemed like he lost a part of him after Superunknown. He WAS such an incredible singer, freaking awesome.

Top 3 Tracks:
1. 4th of July(Soundgarden)

2. Cochise(Audioslave)
3. Beyond The Wheel(Soundgarden)

Think he can't carry off that last track live?
Here's the proof that he can:

From here on, the list gets abit tougher for me to decide.

5.

Myles Kennedy

Vocalist of Alter Bridge. In their debut album, I don't understand why there was a hype over this guy's vocals. Mark Tremonti kept on saying that Myles is a good vocalist, but I can't see it even though I bought One Day Remains. But with their latest album, Blackbird, this dude sure as hell soared! His vocals is awesome, he reaches high notes with ease. And the thing that boggles the mind is that he plays the guitar WHILE singing in live shows and he still reaches the note. He also has the ability to hold a note long enough to make your ears pop...ok,that was an exaggeration but he's awesome.

Top 3 Tracks:
1. Blackbird
2. Ties That Bind
3. The End Is Here

4.

Tarja Turunen

Powerhouse vocals, widest range among all the aforementioned or even better than the singers that I have listed above her. The former vocalist for Nightwish is able to sing opera in metal and actually make it sound beautiful. She's so awesome that I can't describe it in words. It's a shame that she went solo, but she is still an awesome vocalist nonetheless. The only reason she is at number 5 is because she is not versatile, if she was, she'd definitely be at the top.

Top 3 tracks:
1. Ghost Love Score
2. Wishmaster
3. Elvenpath

3.

Bruce Dickinson

Awesome powerhouse vocals even as he grows older. He can still sing Run To The Hills when most of us who are younger than him are cracking our voices like pre-pubescent little boys. He's able to soar high with his vocals and even hit low notes straight after with pure ease. There's nothing much to talk about this guy. All in all, he is a great vocalist with charisma and showmanship in live shows and still able to reach the pitches and notes after prancing here and there.

Top 3 tracks:
1. Run To The Hills
2. 2 Minutes To Midnight
3. Hallowed Be Thy Name

2.

Ronnie James Dio

See that sign? Yes, that explains everything. He IS your master. So bow down to him. Incredible showmanship in live shows, awesome vocals and he sings about dungeons and dragons without being too over dramatic. How much awesomeness is packed into this small guy? Well, there's more actually, he ages like wine. His vocals is still good and he's 64 years old. See what I meant by master?

Top 3 Tracks:
1. Holy Diver
2. The Last In Line
3. Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath)

And here we are at number 1,
I bet most of you saw this coming...

1.

Maynard James Keenan

Weirdo, sex maniac, gay, anti-conformist...but most importantly, he's a freaking awesome vocalist. Both for APC and Tool, he did great work on lyrics as well as singing them. A 30 second scream from The Grudge(Tool) isn't enough? Well then, try Judith(APC). If that's not it then try, Ticks and Leeches(Tool). Maynard is able to scream and drop to a croon or a drone in a split second making your mind boggle and wonder whether is there two vocalist in a certain song or not. In fact, there's only Maynard.

Top Tracks:
1. Lateralus
2. Vicarious
3. Parabol/Parabola
4. 3 Libras(A Perfect Circle)

So that's it, top 10 most awesome vocalists that I have listened to in the past decade of music addiction. But I would like to mention two other guys that are great vocalists in their own rights.

Special Mentions:

Tony Kakko(Sonata Arctica)

Joacim Cans(Hammerfall)

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)

These two dudes are awesome in their own right, but I just can't place them in the list cause they're a case of hit-or-miss. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they sound shitty. So that's why they're here, I still admire their vocal prowess though.

That's all then.
